Workshop of March 23
Two prominent Toastmasters, TM Ruskyle Howser and TM Paul Malone held workshop on our 219th regular meeting in March 23. They accepted the invitation of our club to give lectures on the same theme: “How to be Confident in Public Speaking”. The workshop was divided in two. TM Malone spoke first 30 minutes followed by 20 minutes Q & A session. And the same time was allotted for TM Houser. TM Toru Maruyama acted as the MC and the facilitator.

At first, TM Paul Malone introduced his original formula “4 Gateways to Confidence” in which he dwelled upon the importance of stage time, and said “whether you’re ready for speech or not, just do it and get feedbacks from others”. Do not refuse the VPE’s assignment and try best to live up to the expectation, he said from his own experience. About second gateway, he said “it is important to do the same thing over and over again to overcome difficulties. Confidence is mussels, the more you work, the more you get”. Touching on the third gate, he said “you have to learn from your failure which would elevate you to the next stage. Remember that successful people like Steve Jobs failed up”. On the 4th gateway, he emphasizes the significance of self-doubt and nervousness by quoting one of the prominent speakers, Jay Shetty’s remark that “Selfdoubt shows that I still care what I love to do”. And he appeals “Don’t worry about self-doubt and nervousness because they are necessary things to be confident”.He concluded the workshop with an impressive phrase “Confidence and Self-doubt work together. So, just do it”

In the beginning, TM Ruskyle Houser surprises the audience when he disclosed that he was such a shy boy who spoke 5 words in five days. That proves undeniable fact that a speechless boy could grow to a magnificent speaker.
In contrast to TM Malone’s formula, TM Houser’s secrets to acquire the confidence are not from inner self but from outer appearance. According to him, two things are absolutely necessary. In the first place. he says “You can be confident by looking confident and acting confident, or sound confident”
In order to do this, posture is important. He advises us “lift your chest, drop your shoulders which makes you look confident.” “Creating powerful voice also makes you sound confident and relaxing your face makes you act confident too”.

Another thing he points out is dynamics. Makes your body look big and tall to look majestic, and change your voice dynamic using a vocal variety by which you can grab and hold the attention of the audience, he says.
Referring to the eye contact especially during the speech in front of a large audience, he says “talk to one person and concentrate, then move on to the next person”
TM Houser ended the workshop by saying that it is understandable people talk a lot about the inner psychological control when they refer to the confidence, but it is equally important to pay attention to the way how you look from outside. “Mine is focus out, rather than focus in” he concluded.
